According to Toyota Ontario in OR, the 2019 Toyota Prius is offered in six different trim levels. The entry model is the L Eco, and then the range goes to the LE, XLE, Limited, LE AWD-e and the XLE AWD-e. The trim levels give the game away that the big news for 2019 is the addition of all-wheel drive capability for the Prius for the first time. All models are powered by the same combination of a 1.8-liter inline-four gasoline engine, electric motor and hybrid battery, producing 121 horsepower. It’s the perfect system for running errands around the town or city, but it’s also more than capable of keeping up with the pace on the highway, too. The available all-wheel drive system on LE AWD-e and XLE AWD-e models is basically a pair of small electric motors on the rear wheels that provide enhanced traction.

Good fuel economy is an important attribute for many cars, but it’s fundamental to the Prius, and the latest model excels in this vital area. In its standard form, the 2019 Toyota Prius boasts EPA ratings of 54 mpg in the city and 50 mpg on the highway.* All-wheel-drive versions don’t fall far behind, with ratings of 52 mpg city and 48 mpg highway, but the Prius Eco is best of the bunch with a stunning 58 mpg city and 53 mpg highway.

Standard features are good throughout the range, and base models come with a keyless ignition, adaptive cruise control, a 6.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, automatic emergency braking, three USB charge ports, climate control and a backup camera. Top-level Limited models are particularly generously equipped. Standard features include: 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, remote start, wireless smartphone charging, a premium audio system, an 11.6-inch vertically oriented touchscreen, blind-spot monitors and even a head-up display.

Safety is never neglected by Toyota, and the 2019 Toyota Prius is no exception. The 2019 Prius gets a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA, and the IIHS gives the Toyota its coveted Top Safety Pick status. A lot of advanced safety tech is packed into two packages that are standard across the range, the Star Safety System and Toyota Safety Sense.

The Star Safety System includes enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, ABS brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Toyota Safety Sense then really impresses with a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
