The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is a midsize SUV that provides all the advantages drivers expect from a body-on-frame SUV. The 4Runner may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but buyers looking for a rugged off-roader that drives surprisingly well on paved roads will appreciate what the 4Runner has to offer. And while stalwart 4Runner fans loved the previous model, the folks at the Toyota dealer near Boise tell us that the 2020 4Runner is even more engaging, thanks to a host of new features.

One new feature that makes for a better 4Runner is a new touchscreen stereo system with a bigger screen and more user-friendly controls. The new system features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and the center console gets two new USB ports on the back to allow rear-passengers to charge their devices. Meanwhile, the SR5 and TRD-OffRoad trims get optional smart entry and push-button start.

One change that’s sure to please customers at Toyota dealers near Boise is the newly standard Toyota Safety Sense system. Safety Sense features several active safety technologies, including lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and automatic high-beam control.

The automotive press gives the 2020 Toyota 4Runner high marks, with CNET writing: “There are few vehicles that can stick around for this long without an update and still be as cool as the 4Runner. It looks great, has serious off-road chops and now comes with better driving aids and better phone integration. The 2020 model year tweaks might not be huge, but they make an endearing SUV a little easier to live with.”

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner seats five, with an optional third row that increases seating capacity to seven. The 4Runner comes in five trim levels: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, Limited and TRD Pro. Powering the 4Runner is a 4.0-liter V6 engine that generates 270 horsepower and 278 lb.-ft. of torque, connected to a five-speed automatic transmission. The base SR5 model gets rear-wheel drive standard, while models with all-wheel drive come with low-range gearing.

2020 4Runner models with rear-wheel drive get an EPA-estimated 17 mpg city/21 mpg highway.* All-wheel-drive models check in with 17 mpg city/20 mpg highway.

Drivers planning on using the 4Runner for towing will appreciate its 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity. There’s a lot of passenger and cargo space. Owners get 47.2 cubic feet of space behind the second-row seats. To get even more cargo space, just fold down the rear seats for 89.7 cubic feet. The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s flat-load floor, wide tailgate and sliding cargo tray make it easy to move large items in and out of the cargo area.

The driver gets a commanding view. Passengers will stay comfortable in the supportive front seats, even on longer trips. There’s plenty of headroom and even the second row has lots of space, with seats that recline for even more comfort. An eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and cloth upholstery are standard. Options include faux-leather seats, leather seats, heated front seats, ventilated front seats and a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat.
